The nineties: decade of Nirvana, Johnny's and Marina's and annoying sitcoms. Grunge opened the doors for alternative rock to mainstream audiences, though not always. Helmet must be one of the most underrated bands of the last 20 years. With their massive riffs, dark militaristic drums and barking vocals, Helmet created metal for those who don't like metal. Stripped to the bare essence-metal if you like, with, once in a while, jazzy parts, funky grasps or cutting blues. Even if this recipe didn't translate into financial, mainstream success, it definitively proved to be a recipe for becoming one of those bands, that hardly noticeable, put their stamp on rock.

FIGHTING WITH WIRE (uk)
Brit-punk band Fighting With Wire oozes the youthful energy Madonna is jealous of as it is packed with great, uplifting, edgy pop hooks and crunchy guitars that spit out one great melody after another, laced with angular twangs that are so typically post-hardcore. FWW draws influence from such bands as At the Drive-In, Weezer and Fugazi and is ready to take over.
