The name Big John Bates might evoke visions of tough cowboys, hot deserts, banjos and country, but that is only part of the truth. His Americana sound does contain some country, but it functions as the skeleton to which creepy southern gothic, indie and dark blues put their flesh on. The overall sound takes you in an atmosphere of grotesque circuses, dark horror fairytales and the burlesque. Coated with a layer of rustic, dark southern elements, this music will find fans among those who like 16 Horsepower, Murder By Death and Jack White.
